Castaway Cay: The Complete Guide to Disney's Private Island

The crown jewel of any Bahamas itinerary — how to make the most of every hour on Disney's private island.

What is Castaway Cay?

Castaway Cay is Disney's private island in the Bahamas, accessible exclusively to Disney Cruise Line guests. Located near Abaco Island, it can only be reached by DCL ships — the ship docks directly at the island (no tender boats required), making it one of the most convenient private island experiences in the Caribbean.

The island is masterfully themed to feel like a "real" Bahamian village — not an over-built resort. The beaches are genuinely beautiful, the water is clear and calm, and Disney has managed to build significant infrastructure while maintaining the island's natural feel.

The verdict: Castaway Cay is consistently rated the #1 highlight of Disney Cruise Line by guests. It is, by most accounts, the best private island experience in the cruise industry.

The Beaches

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Family Beach (Pelican Plunge)

Family

The main family beach closest to the ship. Home to Pelican Plunge — two waterslides on a floating platform just offshore. Perfect calm water for young swimmers. Tram service connects here to the rest of the island.

💡 Tip: Arrive early and claim chairs near the water — the best spots go fast.
🧘

Serenity Bay

Adults Only (18+)

A separate, quieter beach at the far end of the island, accessible by tram. Truly adults-only — enforced at the entrance. Hammocks, a bar (Castaway Air Bar), and significantly calmer atmosphere than the family beach.

💡 Tip: Take the tram — it's too far to walk comfortably. The bar here makes excellent frozen drinks.
💦

Spring-A-Leak Water Play Area

Kids

Ground-level water play area with splash pads, dumping buckets, and spray features. Located near the family beach — perfect for toddlers and young kids who aren't ready for the waterslides.

💡 Tip: Younger kids often prefer this to the waterslides. Factor it into your beach day planning.

Activities & Rentals

🤿

Snorkeling

A dedicated snorkel trail with a sunken Mickey plane, treasure chest, and diverse marine life. Equipment rentals available. One of the best beginner snorkeling experiences in the Bahamas.

🚲

Bike Rentals

Adult and kids bikes available for exploring the island's trails — about 2.5 miles of paved paths. Tandem bikes and bikes with kid seats also available. Book early, they run out.

🛶

Water Sports

Kayaks, paddleboards, banana boats, sailboats, and more available near the family beach. Instruction provided for beginners. Prices vary by activity.

Pelican Plunge Slides

Two waterslides on the floating platform offshore — one spiraling, one straight. Kids and adults love them. The water around the platform is perfect for floating.

🎣

Castaway Cay 5K

Run the island! DCL offers an unofficial 5K route around Castaway Cay on most days. No registration required — just wake up early and go. You'll get a commemorative medal.

💆

Castaway Cay Spa

An outpost of the onboard Senses Spa, offering massages and treatments outdoors with ocean views. Book these before sailing — they fill up.

Food & Drinks — What's Included

The island BBQ lunch is included in your cruise fare and is one of the best free meals on any DCL sailing. Seating is on the beach with picnic tables and shaded pavilions.

Cookies BBQ (Family Beach)

The main lunch location — BBQ ribs, grilled chicken, hot dogs, corn on the cob, watermelon, and sides. Massive variety and consistently excellent quality.

Serenity Bay Bar & Grill

Adults-only beach BBQ with the same quality fare as Cookies but in a quieter setting.

Soft drinks, water, lemonade

Available at multiple stations around the island.

$
Alcohol

Beer, cocktails, and frozen drinks are available for purchase at multiple bars. The Heads Up Bar near the family beach and Castaway Air Bar at Serenity Bay.

Ice cream

Soft-serve ice cream available at a station near the family beach. A crowd favorite.

Insider Tips

💡 Be among the first off the ship — the island feels noticeably less crowded in the first 90 minutes
💡 Bring your own snorkel gear if you have it — saves money and is more comfortable than rentals
💡 The ship's food trucks are sometimes available at Castaway Cay for an extra fee — skip them, the BBQ lunch is better
💡 Claim chairs, then go explore — leave towels or items on chairs to hold your spot before heading to activities
💡 Characters appear in beachwear on Castaway Cay — unique photo opportunity you can't get anywhere else
💡 The tram runs constantly — don't feel obligated to walk everywhere in the heat
💡 Bring reef-safe sunscreen — required by Bahamian law and genuinely important for the marine ecosystem
💡 Last ship departure is usually around 4-5pm — give yourself a buffer to be back on board
