Civitavecchia (Rome)

Gateway to the Eternal City

About Civitavecchia (Rome)

Civitavecchia is Rome's port — a functional city with limited sightseeing of its own, but an excellent gateway to one of history's greatest cities. Rome is 60-90 minutes by train or organized transport. With a full port day, you can spend meaningful time in Rome. The Vatican, Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and Pantheon are all accessible, though not all in one day comfortably.

What to Do

🏟️

Colosseum & Roman Forum

The Colosseum is the icon of Ancient Rome — 2,000 years old and still breathtaking. Book timed entry in advance. The adjacent Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are included in the same ticket.

Vatican City

The Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica. One of the greatest art collections on Earth. Book skip-the-line tickets months in advance — lines can be 3+ hours without them.

Trevi Fountain

The world's most famous fountain and a must-see. Extremely crowded at all times — arrive early morning or late evening for the best experience.

🕌

The Pantheon

A 2,000-year-old Roman temple in near-perfect condition. Free to enter. One of the most remarkable buildings ever constructed.

🚂

Train to Rome

Direct trains run from Civitavecchia to Rome Termini (60-90 min). This is the cheapest and often fastest way to reach Rome independently.

Food & Drink

$
Roman trattorias near Testaccio

Testaccio is Rome's food neighborhood — authentic and less touristy than most areas. Cacio e pepe, carbonara, and supplì are must-orders.

$
Gelato from a gelateria (not a café)

Real gelato is served from a covered metal container, not piled high in a pyramid. Look for a gelateria artisanal sign.

Insider Tips

💡 Book Colosseum and Vatican tickets months in advance — they sell out and lines are brutal
💡 Choose Rome OR Vatican City — trying to do both in one day is exhausting
💡 DCL shore excursions to Rome are expensive — the train is much cheaper for independent travelers
💡 Leave the pier early — 60-90 minutes each way means you need 8+ hours in Rome to feel comfortable
💡 Rome has excellent street food — try supplì (rice balls) and pizza al taglio
💡 Watch the time carefully — missing the ship in a European port is a real risk
